How you’ve helped Zambia’s energy crisis

Planet Solar NI donates £1 to Solar Aid for every solar panel we install. Our support since 2006, the year Solar Aid launched, has helped drive down the cost of solar lights and increased the market for an alternative to dirty and expensive kerosene. Here’s the latest news from the front line.

The Skala family in the Copper Belt region of Zambia making use of their new solar light

Hi Andy,

My name is Nancy and i’m the Call Centre Coordinator at the SunnyMoney Zambia office. You may remember the letter I wrote last month for SolarAid’s Christmas appeal. I‘ve just been told that the appeal raised an amazing £40k which is fantastic news. And if you include the £23k raised from the Big Give Challenge in early December too – it makes for a very merry Christmas.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support. I can tell you first hand how much this means to myself, my colleagues and the people of Zambia. That £40k alone will cover the cost of a further 13,000 lights and help ensure businesses can stay open during the blackouts. It will also mean children can study and families won’t have to pay extortionate amounts for candles and kerosene.

We’re about to start our schools campaigns in Lundazi and Chipata and your support means we can now make the 12-15 hour drive with vans full of solar lights to meet the really high demand we know we will encounter when we get there.

It’s amazing how much difference one little light can make to a family in Zambia. A device so small, simple and affordable – but packed with the latest in LED bulbs, batteries and solar technology. We have an opportunity like never before to help lift people out of the darkness, because these blackouts may be here for some time.

Thank you once again for your amazing support and I wish you all the best for 2016.
